Ketamine Infusion Therapy Q & A

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is an anesthetic medication that has been used during surgery and outpatient procedures for decades. When ketamine is administered in a low dose, however, it has a different impact. It alleviates psychological disorders, chronic stress and some pain disorders.

Though ketamine is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s used off-label to treat these conditions. Off-label simply means that the medication is used for something other than the reason it was approved. Though that sounds ominous, off-label use is quite common and legal.

Subanesthetic doses of ketamine may be used for:

  • ZFibromyalgia
  • ZMigraines
  • ZDepression
  • ZTreatment-resistant depression
  • ZBipolar depression
  • ZAnxiety disorders
  • ZPTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • ZOCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • ZEating Disorders
  • ZBody Dysmorphia

How does Ketamine Infusion Therapy work?

Ketamine directly targets your brain, where it works as an NMDA receptor antagonist. That means it blocks glutamate receptors. Glutamate transmits pain signals and regulates psychological conditions like depression and anxiety.

When the receptors are blocked, a cascade of chemical reactions occurs that relieve pain and improve mental health conditions. Your pain is eased as ketamine changes the way your central nervous system processes pain signals.

An initial boost in glutamate levels may be why ketamine produces quick results. For many patients, depression improves within a few hours or during their first few ketamine treatments. By comparison, antidepressants take weeks to months to work, if they work at all.

You also get long-lasting results because ketamine triggers new and stronger connections between neurons. As new neural pathways develop, your brain becomes more adaptable.

With these neural changes, you have the opportunity to leave old thoughts and problems behind and develop new habits that send you forward into a brighter future.

At Illumma, we believe that ketamine is a powerful transformational tool but that lasting healing is achieved through integration.

Integration refers to taking the gained insights, emotions, or attitudes from your experience and incorporating them into your day-to-day. As a general definition, integration means “bringing parts together to make a whole.”

What to expect?

The Infusion Experience

Illumma’s spa-like infusion center was designed with your healing in mind. Our team is there to create a safe, comfortable, and relaxing environment personalized to your needs. You will be greeted at the door and welcomed back to your private infusion room by your infusionist. This trained paramedic ensures, you are safe and comfortable and hold space for your transformational process. Each session with a guided meditation allows your brain to get into the healing mindset. We will then begin the ketamine infusion, which will last sixty minutes.

After the infusion has ended, you will recover in your infusion room, where our nurse practitioner will meet with you and create an individualized plan based on your experience. At Illumma, we believe that you are your inner healer, and we use your input in combination with our clinical knowledge to customize your infusion protocol.

Once you feel recovered, typically 10-20 minutes, our team will help you to your ride. Clients often feel hungry and a little tired after their infusions. We suggest you go home, get something to eat and relax. Remember, you are in a very open and receptive state post-infusion, so try not to consume or do anything stressful or emotionally irritating. This is an excellent time for self-care, reflection, and listening to the needs of your body. We suggest journaling, walking, drawing, meditation, or any other practice that brings you insight and peace.

Despite these physical sensations, it is crucial to know that most clients do not start to feel better before their first treatment or even on the same day. For the first four to six hours after the infusion session, you may feel anxious that nothing is happening. You may also have a lingering unpleasant headache, mild dizziness, or nausea. Know that ketamine is starting to work on the growth of trauma-stunted neurons and synapses in the brain despite these physical sensations.

After 24-72 hours, clients, and/or their family and friends, may notice a change (i.e., increased energy, whistling and/or smiling, making jokes, or just a more optimistic overall demeanor). Think of the next two to three days as your window of opportunity to make breakthroughs in therapy or coaching. Also, invite the chance to explore further with meditation, journaling, or breathwork.

Further, clinically noticeable effects are cumulative; several sessions will result in a more consistent and longer-lasting impact. Illumma will partner with your existing mental health care provider to tailor the experience to your goals. If you don’t already have a provider, we’ll connect you with some of the best in the industry.

Throughout your six-infusion series, we will increase your dosage to find your optimal level. The series is typically done over 4-6 weeks, depending on needs and scheduling. After the initial series, most clients feel the effects continue to improve for, at least, the next thirty days, which is when our team will check in with you. Subsequent single maintenance (or “booster”) infusions may be necessary to sustain symptom improvement. Each client is unique; these boosters may be indicated anytime, three weeks to three months after the initial series.

What happens during Ketamine Infusion Therapy?

Ketamine is administered through an intravenous infusion. Your treatment protocol is customized to meet your needs, but most people get a series of six transfusions over 4-6 weeks.

The results from one infusion last a few days to a month. Your results last longer when you get a series of transfusions, typically providing relief for several weeks to months. As the effect starts to wear off, a single booster infusion is often enough to restore and extend your results as the effect begins to wear off.

Your appointment is scheduled for two hours, but most clients are finished in about 90 minutes. After you are greeted at the door and welcomed to your private infusion room, there will be a 10-15 minute guided meditation to get you in the healing mindset. When you are ready, the infusion will begin and will last for 60 minutes. Once the injection has concluded, you will recover in your infusion room, and our nurse practitioner will meet with you to assess your experience.

Highly experienced health care professionals constantly monitor you to ensure you’re safe and comfortable. During the transfusion, some people feel like they’re in a dream state or experience changes in their vision, speech, or thought processes. Though side effects aren’t familiar, they can occur. Your trained professional is there to help should you develop nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or high blood pressure.
